Abstract

392,256. Mounting engine units. HUMBER, Ltd., Stoke, Coventry, and ORD, L. C., Cavendish House, Cavendish Road East, Nottingham. Dec. 9, 1931, No. 34129. [Class 79 (iii).] An engine unit on a motor vehicle is supported at the extreme front end by a pair of resilient mountings close together and at the rear end, around the gear-box shaft, by a single radially.yielding mounting with means for regulating its effect. The front mountings, Fig. 2, which may be about eight inches apart, comprise comparatively hard rubber bushes 8 carried by tubular stems 4 on brackets 5 bolted to the chassis cross frame member 6, a pair of bushes being mounted on each stem, housed in a cylinder 7 on opposite sides of an apertured partition 7a, and compressed by nuts and washers on a bolt 9 passing through the stem. The cylinders 7 fit and are bolted to housings 3 formed on a plate 2 secured to the face of the crank casing, preferably above the crank shaft. The rear mounting may comprise a pneumatic tube or a partial or complete ring 11 of substantial dimensions, Fig. 3, of sponge or other soft rubber engaging the bearing housing of the gear-box or a casing 10 enclosing the universal joint of the transmission and seated on or in a transverse frame member 12 with a co-operating cap 13. The compression of the rubber may be varied to regulate the resilience by means of washers, shims or packing members interposed between the cap and the support 12, or between flanges on such parts and the rubber &c., or such flanges may be adjustable. To allow clearance for the floor of the vehicle the cap and mounting may be flattened as at 17 or the mounting may be eccentric or formed with a gap. It may comprise a pair of rings or may be formed of segments. Holes may be formed therethrough for passage of brake or other control rods. The cushioning effects are stated to be favourable for the mounting of the brake and gear control levers directly on the unit.
