392,220. Carbon papers; ink. VICTORY-KIDDER PRINTING MACHINE CO., Ltd., Birkenhead, FRANCIS, F. G., 23, Forestdale, Southgate, and HEWITT, E. R., 2, Queen's Road, Finsbury Park, both in London. Nov. 14, 1931, No. 31607. [Class 100 (iv).] A coating for carbon papers comprises a heterogeneous composition, one phase of which is formed by a vehicle substantially permanently adherent to the base and not transferred during use, while the other phase is a substantially liquid colour composition mechanically held in the vehicle. The composition applied is initially in the form of a homogeneous fluid containing components for the production of the colouring liquid, one or more cellulose esters, and a volatile solvent, and on removal of the solvent the cellulose ester forms a spongy or porous layer in the pores of which the colouring liquid is held. Plastifiers are added according to the degree of hardness required. The composition can be applied in the usual way, and the solvent is then removed, preferably slowly in order to prevent the formation of a sticky layer, and can be recovered for further use. According to examples, colouring liquids comprising montan wax, a material known as " Resin AA," castor oil, colza oil,. and blue, black, purple, green, or red colouring matter are added to a solution of cellulose acetate in acetone and a plastifier such as amyl tartrate or ethyl phthalate ; alternatively part of the cellulose acetate can be replaced by cellulose nitrate.
