Abstract

391,941. Compound sheet material. GRAFTON, W. P., 122, Foots Cray Road, Eltham, London. Feb. 20, 1932, No. 5151. [Class 140.] In the manufacture of compound sheet material comprising a layer of tinfoil secured by adhesive between two layers of cashmere, a web of tinfoil is led from a roller 12 under a roller 14 arranged near the bottom of a vessel 15 containing adhesive, the foil then passing vertically upwards, without coming into contact with any rollers or the like outside the vessel 15, to a pair of heated adjustable rollers 16, 17 to which webs of cashmere are led from rollers 19 ; the conditions are adjusted so that during the vertical travel of the foil the adhesive becomes tacky. Preferably the compound material is led from the rollers 16, 17 to drying rollers 20 in such a manner that each face of the material contacts in turn with the rollers. The rollers 20 may be mounted on a common bracket 22 free to pivot about an axis 23 and urged by a spring (not shown) in a counterclockwise direction. The finished material is wound on a roller 21. Modified forms of apparatus are described in which (1) a pair of adjustable doctor blades is arranged in the vessel 15 above the liquid level, for the purpose of removing excess adhesive from the foil, and (2) the cashmere webs are impregnated with adhesive before they are fed to the rollers 16, 17 ; in the latter modification, wringing rollers, with or without doctor blades, are arranged above the bath in which each cashmere web is impregnated, and each web is led upwards to a guide roller and thence in turn to heated drying rollers and a storage roller.
