- This invention relates to machines for applying coating in a liquid state to the surface of cardboard and other materials; having reference more especially to that class of machines wherein a roll or drum is mounted to rotate within and above a tank containing the coating liquid, the peripheral surface of such roll or drum being partly immersed in the contents of the tank and being adapted in its rotation to transfer the liquid in a film or layer to an opposing surface.
- An object of my invention is to provide a simple and efiicient construction whereby a smooth and uniform application of the liquid to the cardboard or other material is effected.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AooLPH POTDEVIN, a citizen f the United States, and resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Coating Cardboard and Other Materials, of which\ the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for applying coating in a liquid state to the surface of cardboard and other materials; having reference more especially to that class of machines wherein a roll or drum is mounted to rotate within and above a tank containing the coating liquid, the peripheral surface of such roll or drum being partly immersed in the contents of the tank and being adapted in its rotation to transfer the liquid in a film or layer to an opposing surface.
An object of my invention is to provide a simple and efiicient construction whereby a smooth and uniform application of the liquid to the cardboard or other material is effected.
Another object is to provide means whereby the liquid contents of the tank are kept constantly in circulation in such a manner as to insure a substantially even level as well as the uniform viscosity of the liquid within the tank preparatory to the removal of the liquid by the rotating roll.
With these objects in view my invention comprises novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and claimed.

The shaft of the roll 6 is provided with a spur wheel 13 which meshes with a pinion let loose on an adjacent stud shaft 15 extending fromv one end of the tank, and with a pinion 16 fast on the shaft of the roll 10. Fast on the pinion 14 is a pulley l7 and also fast on the shaft of the pressure roll 7 is a pulley 18. About these pulleys is flexed a belt'19 which is driven from a suitable source of power. Thus motion is directly transmitted by the belt to the pulleys 17, 18; the rolls 6, 10 are driven through the gearing from the pulley 17, and the pressure roll 7 partakes of the rotation of the pulley 18. The ratio of the gearing is such that the surface speed of the pressure roll exceeds that of the transfer roll 6. When the transfer and pressure rolls, and. in consequence, the interposed sheet, are driven at the same surface speed the film of liquid carried up by the transfer roll has a tendency to drag and spread rearwardly upon the under sur face of the sheet, particularly when glue is being applied to material of relatively heavy texture; but by increasing the speed of the pressure roll above that of the transfer roll as above mentioned, the movement of the sheet is correspondingly accelerated, and
