Abstract

390,897. Carrying cables through partitions. BRITISH INSULATED CABLES, Ltd. and BLADES, R. W., Lynwood, Eccleston Park, both in Prescot, Lancashire. Jan. 5, 1932, No. 278. [Class 36.] A gland for making a fluidtight joint around an armoured cable passing through an aperture comprises a chamber through which the cable passes, with packing members for closing the apertures formed between the armouring and the chamber, and means for compressing a sealing compound inside the chamber so as to force it into the interstices between the armouring and the adjacent portions of the cable structure both within and immediately outside of the chamber. The compression of the sealing compound may be effected by an external pump connected to an aperture in the chamber wall or by the forcing inward of some part of the chamber. In the embodiment shown, a cable 17 is carried through-a bulkhead by a gland comprising a chamber 1 formed with cylindrical ends 2 and with a central annular flange 3 for bolting to the bulkhead. The space between. the cable, armouring and the inner wall of each chamber end 2 is closed by a tubular sleeve 5 which is slidable within the chamber end 2 and which makes fluidtight connection with the inner wall of the chamber end 2 and with the cable armouring by asbestos packing rings 9, 14 respectively. The packing ring 14 engages a smooth surface 18 formed on the armouring by wiping with plumbing metal. After the gland is installed and filled with sealing compound through filling holes 23, each sleeve 5 is advanced within the chamber end 2 by tightening a nut 13 which is threaded on the chamber end and is formed with a shoulder 12 for engagement with a collar 11 on the sleeve 5. To prevent rotation of the sleeve 5, a set-screw 21 is threaded in the chamber end 2 and engages a slot 20 in the sleeve. The inward motion of the sleeve 5 is checked when the filling compound exudes from the interstices between the armouring. wires immediately outside the wiped surface 18.
