Abstract

[Class 139.] Escapements.-An escapement of the lever type has two wheels b, c mounted on a single spindle a and resiliently coupled together (spring d) for relative movement, the wheels coacting with a single pin k. The tooth pitch of the two wheels is the same, but the lifting faces 6, 8 of the two sets of teeth are oppositely directed, the teeth of one wheel being opposite the gaps of the other wheel. The pin k is on an arm i rigid with the lever 5 and with a spring l coacting with a banking pin m. Coupling spring d is attached at its inner end to wheel c and at its outer end to a pin e on wheel b, which is rigid with arbor a. Pin e is covered with rubber or other sound-damping material e<1> and coacts with springs f, g on wheel c. As the lever 5 and arm i oscillate, pin k moves from the radial locking face 9 to the lifting face 6 and thence to the radial locking face 7 to hold the wheel c. Wheel b rotates counterclockwise until pin e meets spring f. On the return swing of arm i the pin k passes to lifting face 8 and thence to locking face 9 to hold the wheel b whilst wheel c continues its movement until spring g meets pin e. By permanently bending the spring l the swing of arm i may be adjusted. The pin k is cut to a flat shape so that it may act as a flat spring and yield.
