Abstract
Cellular anhydrous sodium borate silicate, which has been dried and baked without fusion at 900-1400 DEG F., is used as sound and heat insulating material. The porous material is made by drying and baking a mixture of alkali borate, alkali silicate and water. Boric acid or borax in powder or solution is added to an alkali silicate solution and the mixture dried, e.g. by spraying into a hot gas until it contains 10-35 per cent of water, and then baked in a mould; or alkali silicate solution is dried until it contains 10-35 per cent water, comminuted, mixed with powdered alkali borate and baked, e.g. in pellets agitated to keep them separate. The mixture may be dried to a glassy solid with 10-35 per cent water and baked in a rigid mould allowing escape of vapour but restraining the solid to a predetermined size and specific gravity. U.S.A. Specification 1,724,185 is referred to.ALSO:Cellular anhydrous sodium borate silicate which has been dried and baked without fusion at 900-1400 DEG F. is used as sound- and heat-insulating material. The mixture may be dried to a glassy solid with 10-35 per cent water and baked in a rigid mould allowing escape of vapour but restraining the solid to a predetermined size and specific gravity. The cellular material may form structural material reinforced by fibrous material, e.g. asbestos or glass wool, or by perforated sheet metal, or metal wool or shavings, and coated with waterproof fabric or paper, cellulose ester, or sprayed with metal. The cellular material may be mixed with thermoplastic material, rubber, asphalt emulsion, waxes, resins, gums, phenolformaldehyde, glycerine-phthalic acid and other condensation products. Pellets of the cellular material are embedded or coated with thermoplastic or cementitious material, and finally covered with rubber solution, varnish, paint or glaze. U.S.A. Specification 1,724,185 is referred to.
