Abstract

389,771. Propelling-pencils. GODDEN, A., 13, Kent Avenue, Ealing, London. Oct. 31, 1932, No. 30642. [Class 146 (iii).] Relates to propelling-pencils of the kind in which the lead is held by a sheath 10 provided at its inner end with a pin 16 which engages a slot 17 in a helical member 7 and in which the lead is adapted to be ejected from its sheath by an axial pin 11 having its end 15 bent to engage the helical slot in spaced relation to the pin 16, whereby relative movement of the member 7 causes the two pins 15, 16 to travel in unison in spaced relation during the greater part of their longitudinal movement, the outward movement of the sheath being arrested at a predetermined point in its travel and the movement of the pin 11 being continued so as to eject the lead from the sheath. According to the invention, the pins 15, 16 leave the groove 17 in turn against the action of a spring- pressed collar 18, whilst, upon inward movement, the pin 15 leaves the groove and slides without constraint therebeyond and the pin 16, upon leaving the groove, causes the helical member 7 to move longitudinally of the outer casing 1 against the action of the collar 18. The helical member 7 has a limited sliding movement determined by a pin 12 on the liner 4 or the casing 1 which engages a slot 13 in the member 7 ; alternatively, the slot may be provided in the casing or liner and be engaged by a pin on the member 7. At the limit of the outward movement of the sheath 10 and pin 11, both pins 15, 16 leave the groove and press against the collar 18, and continued rotation results in the ratcheting of the pin 15 as the tail of the helical groove passes it ; when the rotation is reversed, the pin 15 rises into the groove and is followed after one revolution of the helical member, relative to the pins, by the pin 16, the pins being held against rotation by a groove 9 in a member 8 which together with the nose 2 is rotatable relative to the member 7, outer casing 1 and sleeve 4. Towards the end of the inward movement, the pin 15 leaves the groove 17 and continues its backward movement through the frictional grip upon the lead of the sheath 10, the pin 16 of which still engages the groove, until the end 21 of the sheath abuts the end 5 of the casing. The pin 16 is, on continued rotation, forced to leave the groove but, being now fixed in position, forces the helical member 7 longitudinally of the casing so as to cause the collar 18 to again compress the spring 19, when a ratcheting action of the pin 16 and the tail of the helical member results.
