Abstract
389,295. Forging. CLOUSE, W. L., Tiffin, Ohio, U.S.A. April 26, 1932, No. 11979. [Class 83 (iv).] A feeding-mechanism for forging and like machines comprises an oscillating element adapted to release means at one limit of its movement to couple it to a clutch member, the driver member of the clutch operating the feeding device in one direction only. The feed-rolls for the continuous stock are driven by a shaft 7 to which is connected a clutch member with an integral flange 9 which is driven in the counterclockwise direction, Fig. 5, by the disc 10 and rollers 12, but is freed on clockwise rotation of the disc 10. A disc 18 is oscillated by a link 20 driven by a crank and gearing from the main drive of the forging-machine, and has a segmental recess 21 within which a radial guide 13 on the disc 10 may oscillate. A key 14, outwardly pressed by a spring 17 in the guide 13, normally engages the wall 24 of a rim 23 on member 18, while the guide is engaged on the other side by the wall 21<1> of the recess 21, so that the members 10, 18 are caused to oscillate together. At one limit of the oscillation, a wedge surface on the key 14 may be engaged by an arm 26 on a rock shaft 25 to press it inwardly from engagement with the member 18 to stop the feed. On returning the rock shaft the feed is resumed at the commencement of a complete oscillation, a complete blank-length thus being fed. The shaft 25 may be oscillated by hand by a lever 27, or automatically when the stock is nearly exhausted by a bracket 34, Fig. 11, bearing against the stock S but moving forward under the action of a coiled spring 36 to rock a shaft 31 through links 33, 32 and to rotate the shaft 25 through links 37, 38, 40. A new length of stock may then be abutted against the old and the feed resumed.
