Abstract

388,439. Reversing gearing. AUTOMATIC ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Strowger Works, Liverpool, and HOBSON, S., 13, Canterbury Avenue, Brooke Road, Waterloo, near Liverpool. Aug. 27, 1931, No. 24117. [Class 80 (ii).] A clutch mechanism for producing the traverse movement in a coil winding machine comprises two oppositely rotating driving shafts one or other of which is adapted to be coupled to a drive transmitting member by means of two coil springs mounted respectively on the shafts and each adapted when deformed to engage the drive transmitting member. A base 10, Fig. 1, supports two similar winding mechanisms in one of which standards 12, 13 support a bobbin 15, to be wound, between rotatable cup 18 adjustably mounted in a tailpiece 21 on the standard 13 and an adapter 16 having a bent arm 17 engaging the bobbin to rotate it as the adapter, which is on the spindle of a driving motor 32, rotates. At the other side of the motor 32, the spindle carries a friction disc 33, and adustable towards and away from the centre thereof is an idler roll 34 which also engages a disc 35 in an adjacent hollow shaft 49, Fig. 3, and by the adjustment determines the speed of this shaft which operates the traverse mechanism. This comprises a reciprocating rod 43 mounted in the hollow shaft 49 and in a coaxial hollow shaft 62, a threaded portion of the rod being engaged by an internally threaded cylinder 65 disposed between the hollow shafts. The shaft 62 is geared to the shaft 49 to rotate at the same speed but in the opposite direction and each shaft carries a helical spring 70, Fig. 4, secured at one end to the shaft and formed near its other end with an abutment 118 engaged by one arm of a bell-crank lever 68, the two levers being separated by a flange on a collar 66 loosely mounted on the cylinder 65. Displacement of the collar causes the rotation of one or other of the bell-crank levers which thereby clamps the end of the spring carrying it on to the cylinder 65 to rotate the cylinder and displace the rod 43. A carriage 42, Fig. 1, adjustable along the rod 43 supports a leaf spring guide 29 for the wire and a forked arm 41 embracing a control rod 47. When the carriage rod 43 has moved the guide to the end of a traverse, the arm 41 engages one or other of two adjustable stops 45, 46 on the control rod and displaces the rod endwise. A lever 170, Fig. 3, mounted on the control rod 47 is pressed downwards by a spring on to a horizontally pivoted J-shaped lever 74 which it engages by a V-shaped end slidable on an inverted V-shaped end on the lever 74. Movement of the control rod causes the lever 170 to ride up one face of the end of the lever 74 to the apex thereof and, as it passes over the apex, to displace the lever 74, the other end of which is provided with rollers engaging the collar 66. The traverse movement is thereby reversed, the cylinder 65 being rotated in the opposite direction. The control rod may be displaced manually by an eccentric pin 82, Fig. 1, on a rotatable rod 79, the pin engaging between fixed collars 83, 84 on the rod 47.
