Abstract

388,419. Jacking - attachments on vehicles. HAMILTON, F. A., Hopefield, Whitehouse, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland. Aug. 20, 1931, No. 23452. [Class 79 (iii).] To obtain longitudinal stability when one side or the other of a vehicle is raised off the ground, jacking means for the purpose comprises a V or Y or like shaped body adapted to be hinged or otherwise connected at its wider end to the side of the vehicle in the longitudinal direction thereof and to receive or carry a jack at its other end. In the arrangements shown, a tapered box-like member adapted to receive a separate jack is pivoted between the depending cheeks 3 of a plate 6 adapted to be screwed to the running board a of the vehicle,. a clip 7 secured to the rear end of the plate by bolts 8 and a distance-piece 9 being provided to engage the bottom flange of the chassis longitudinal. The box-member 1, Figs. 1 and 12, is formed with converging sides terminating in a squared socket 1b for the jack and closed when the device is out of use by a cap 16 pivoted at 17 with a spring 19 to hold it open and a catch 18 to keep it shut. At its wider end, the member 1 is carried by pins 2 in cheeks 3 formed on a plate 4 riveted to the plate 6. The device is retained in the raised out of use position by a catch 11 engaging a hook 14 on the plate 6, a spring 15 preventing rattling. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the socket 22 for the jack is carried by a pair of converging arms 20 pivoted on a cross-pin 21 mounted in flanges integral with the plate 6 and carrying springs 24 which tend to bring the device down into position for use. In this case the cap 25 is pivoted to the plate 6 and stressed by a spring 26a so that by means of a catch 27a it also acts to retain the device in the raised out of use position, release being effected by means of a handle 27. A jack, Fig. 8, for use with the hinged holder comprises a screwed stem 32 in a tubular casing 31 terminating in a squared boss 30 to fit the socket member 1b or 22 and embodying a housing 34 for a nut and worm and wheel gearing by which the stem is operated. Notches 63 in the boss 30 may engage a retaining projection 62 in the socket member, Fig. 4. With the form of socket member shown in Fig. 1, insertion of the jack releases the catch 11. The operating spindle 36 of the jack is provided with a coupling head 37 with pins for engagement by the forked end 43 of a rod 41, Figs. 9 and 12, adapted to be rotated by a crank arm 46 inserted through squared openings in a forked head 44 with retaining spring 47. To facilitate operation, a shaped plate 48 located between a spring 51 and a collar 50 on the rod, is adapted to be inserted into a guide or holding plate 46a secured to the underside of the running board. To effect connection, the end of the plate 48 is inserted through a slot in a flange 46c of the plate 46a and is slotted to engage a downward lug 46b thereon. In a modified form of operating means, a flanged sleeve on the rod 41 simply engages a seating in a bracket attached to the running board whilst the crank arm 46 is permanently connected to the head 44 one arm 45 of which is forked whilst the other is slotted so that the crank arm may be brought parallel to the rod 41 and connected thereto for storage by a spring clip. The Provisional Specification describes a telescopic rod operating the jack through bevel gearing.
