[Classes 100 (i) and 100 (ii).] Number - printing apparatus ; inking - apparatus; feeding webs ; cleaning printing-surfaces. -I n a numbering- machine for continuous lengths of kinematograph film &c., the numbering-discs are mounted on a rotary carrier on an axis at right-angles to the carrier axis and form an arcuate printing-surface ; the carrier is rotated to give a surface velocity equal to the velocity of the film. A drum 1 is driven from a film perforating or like machine by a sprocket chain 11, and a carrier drum 2, pressed against the drum 1 by adjustable spring pressure, is driven from the drum by gears 13, 14. The film passes over a roller 8, between the drums 1, 2, and over a roller 9, and thence round a floating roller to a friction-driven rewind spindle. The numbering-discs 53 are mounted on an axle 49 in the carrier 2 and drive each other by pawl-and-ratchet mechanism as usual. The units disc is driven by a pawl 55 on a lever 40 which is connected to a yoke 42 sliding on the carrier 2. The printing-mechanism may also include hand-set discs, which may be locked in position. The yoke 42 is oscillated by a roller 44 running on the edge of a cam 7. The inking-device comprises a milled roller 63 rotating in a trough 59, which is fitted with a wiping-pad 64. A small felt roller 71 lies in contact with the roller 63 and can be adjusted to contact the type by means of arms 74. The types are wiped by a brush 5 and the change of number takes place between the wiping and inking points. Auxiliary guide rollers 82 and 82a, mounted on spring-pressed arms 78, press the film to the drum 1, which is provided with projections 84 to engage the holes in the film. The guide rollers may be provided with slightly-raised tracks 85 to support the film.
