Abstract
388,220. Coin-sorting apparatus. BYRNE, E. L. W., 329, High Holborn, London.-(Brandt Automatic Cashier Co. ; Watertown, Wisconsin, U.S.A.) March 11, 1932, No. 7338. [Class 116.] A coin-sorting machine comprises a rotating selector disc which delivers coins one at a time to a distributer situated thereunder and rotating in synchronism therewith, under which is situated a sorting member having apertures of varying widths. In the embodiment shown in vertical section in Fig. 1 and in plan and partly in section in Fig. 2, a tilted hopper, having a cylindrical wall 1 and a slanting bottom wall 2, has mounted within it a distributer 3 and a selector disc 4 directly attached by screws or other members to the upper end of the distributer so as to form a unitary structure therewith. Between the distributer and the outer portion of the selector disc is a ring 5 seated upon a shoulder 6 in the hopper and held in position by the removable portion 7 of the hopper which is attached to an outer ring 8 by means of tie bolts 9 extending through notches in this ring and in the ears of the hopper. The hopper is provided around its lowermost side with an upwardly projecting portion 10 which carries an annular slide 11 held in contact with the inner sides of the hopper by a spring 12 which has its ends fastened to the slide and is hooked beneath a projecting member 13 carried by the hopper extension 10, the slide thus being able to move upward if coins crowd below it. The lower face of the slide is bevelled so that coins thrown into the hopper are presented to the selector disc in a flat manner, and are carried round in notches 15 in the outer edge thereof. A spring-urged finger 16 prevents the coins from being lodged in pairs in the notches, and also removes crooked coins. In its upper portion the ring 5 is provided with an aperture 19, above which is a guard-plate 18 to prevent coins other than those carried in the notches from falling through the aperture. As shown in Fig. 6, which is an edge view of the distributer and associated parts, coins carried in the notches 15 on arriving at the aperture 19 fall through it into the pockets 20 of the distributor 3, in which, on account of the inclination of the upper portion of the trailing sides of the pockets, they assume a vertical position and are carried around the channel-like ring 24, shown in perspective in Fig. 7, until in the lowest portion thereof they reach the stepped cut-outs 25. Here the coins drop through the appropriately sized openings and pass through slots or shoots in the sorting head 27 into the coin-receiving trays 29. For driving the machine there is provided a relatively large fibre gear 31 which is urged by leaf springs 33 against a metal washer 32 adjacent to the distributer, thus providing a yielding drive which permits relative sliding under abnormal conditions. The gear 31 is driven by gearing from an electric motor 39.
