Abstract

388,207. Cycle brakes. ANSTEY, F. and RUDGEWHITWORTH, Ltd., Crow Lane, Coventry. Feb. 22, 1932, No. 5210. [Class 136 (i).] A cycle brake of the type in which the brake pads move in a direction substantially normal to the side faces of the wheel rim comprises a forked or like member connected to a pair of rocking levers which are adapted to move and parallel to the plane of the forked member are provided with brake shoes adapted to be brought into contact with opposite faces of the rim by movement of the forked member in a direction towards the wheel axis. The forked member may be actuated by the outer member of a Bowden-wire transmission. Brake pads 3 are supported in shoes 4 each connected to a bracket 5 by a rivet 6 and a bolt 7, the latter passing through a vertical slot to permit of slight angular adjustment. Each bracket 5 is adjustably connected by means of a screw 12 and slot 13 to a bell-crank lever formed of two plates 10, 11, or of a single piece of folded metal, these bell-crank levers being pivoted at 16 to lugs 14, 15 on the cycle fork. The pivotal movement is effected by downward movement of a forked member 19, preferably flexible, which is connected to bolts 22 and is actuated by a Bowden &c. transmission. The inner Bowden cable is connected at 29 to a fixed yoke 24 secured to the pivot pins 16, and the outer sleeve of the Bowden wire rests within the upper end of a cable adjuster 30, which extends into telescopic members 26, 27 containing a spring 28, the forked member 19 being mounted between the member 27 and an adjusting-nut 31. The return spring 28 may be replaced by springs at the pivots, or the member 19 may be made resilient. The yoke 24 may be replaced by a stop fixed to the cycle fork &c. According to a further modification, the bell-crank levers are operated by a rod transmission.
