Abstract

387,347. Aircraft wing bracing. VICKERS (AVIATION), Ltd. and WALLIS, B. N., Byfleet Road, Weybridge, Surrey. Aug. 1, 1931, Nos. 21980/31 and 12232/32. [Class 4.] The spar of a single-spar wing is so connected to one end of a strut, which is connected at its other end to an adjacent wing or other part of the aircraft, as to resist twisting of the spar. Fig. 3 shows a biplane structure wherein single spars 13, 14 are connected each at two points fore and aft to a compound strut 22 extending between the two wings. Each wing may have tension members at the leading and trailing edges braced to the spar by ribs and cross bracing so that fore and aft movements of the ends of the strut 22 are resisted. Near the centre of the machine struts extend from the spars to widely spaced points on the fuselage. Each strut comprises channel members 23, Fig. 5, connected by bracing 24 and connected to the spar by pivots 35, 36 spaced fore and aft. The strut carries formers at intervals to support a fairing. The interplane struts and fuselage may be braced together by wires, or struts in zig-zag formation may be used. A monoplane is described in which the spar is braced at two points fore and aft by two struts converging to a single point on the fuselage. These struts may be separate or braced together. The wing spar and ribs may be constructed as described in Specification 342,268.
