Abstract

387,044. Filters. OLIVER UNITED FILTERS, Inc., Federal Reserve Bank Building, San Francisco, U.S.A. Oct. 13, 1931, No. 28398. Convention date, Oct. 13, 1930. [Class 46.] The sections of a rotary drum, rotary disc, or other continuous filter are separated from one another by distensible division strips. The invention is stated to be specially useful when such filters are used for making paper or insulating board. The Figures show a rotary drum filter with filter cloth 6, Fig. 1, held away from a wooden shell 1 by a screen 5 and a grating or drainage member 4. The drainage space is divided into cells by perforated channel-shaped members 7. Secured to the base of each member 7 is a rubber tube 8 which serves when inflated to stop communication between the adjacent cells. The tubes 8 are connected by pipes 9, Fig. 2, to a distributing valve 12 to which the cells themselves are connected by conduits 16. For the greater part of each revolution each cell and tube is in communication with a vacuum chamber 19, Fig. 3, of the distributing valve, the tubes being deflated and adjacent cells in free communication. The tubes between cells passing the washing and drying positions are however in communication with a source of pressure through a slot 22 in a bridgepiece 21 in the valve and a conduit 23. These tubes are therefore inflated and the adjacent cells sealed from one another. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which the cells have wooden grills or drainage members 31 and distensible division strips 8 are secured in the spaces formed by undercut faces of adjacent members.
