Abstract

Chestnut or other deciduous wood chips are leached to extract tannic acid prior to their being pulped. Logs &c. are fed to a chipper 10 and the chips passed by a conveyer 13 comprising a trough 14 and chain 15 with drags 18 and a similar conveyer 20 through <PICT:0386305/IV/1> shoots 28 to leaching tanks 30, the leaching liquor preferably passing through the vessels in contra-flow. The tanks 30 may be open at the top and have an inner perforate bottom 32 and are supplied with water or leach liquor discharged from a previous tank through pipes 33 and with steam through pipes 34, the tannin containing liquor being drained through pipes 35 and the chips being expelled through pipes 47 with the aid of stirring arms 44 each rotated by and sliding on a shaft 40 and having inclined blades &c. 45 directing the chips outwardly. The leaching liquor from the last tank 30 passes to a storage tank supplying evaporators for concentration and extraction of tannic content. It is stated in an example that an open tank is used for leaching for about 34-42 hours at 160-212 DEG F. using about 1800 gallons of water per " long cord " of chestnut chips giving an extract of " purity of at least 70 as measured on the arbitrary scale used in the industry."
