Abstract
385,443. Tea manufacture. McKERCHER, W. G., P.O., Amguri, Sibsagar, Assam. Jan. 13, 1932, No. 1029. Convention date, Sept. 10, 1931. [Class 129.] The steps of crushing tea leaf, tearing or cutting and curling or rolling, are effected in one operation. This is effected by passing the leaf between rollers provided with variously-shaped intermeshing toothed grooves. In the form illustrated, the rollers, Fig. 1, are provided with spiral V-shaped projections, those on one roller meshing with those on the other. The rollers are spaced apart a little to provide a clearance in which the tea leaf is disintegrated. The spirals 1 on the rollers are of opposite hand, and they intermesh as in Fig. 2. These spirals have cross-cuts formed with oppositely disposed toothed faces 8a, 8b, Fig. 3. The tea leaf is caught between the spirals and teeth and cut, crushed and curled. The distance apart of the rollers is arranged so that the cells of the leaf are broken open to allow the juice to escape and dry on the leaf.
