Abstract
384,395. Receptacles for growing plants ; garden frames. CHURCH, H., Nabbotts, Springfield, Chelmsford. Oct. 14, 1931, No. 28499. [Class 6 (ii).] A propagating or forcing frame for plant culture comprises frame sections e removably built together so that the enclosed volume may be varied by removal or addition of one or more of the sections, and artificial heating means secured within the frame. The frame comprises a bottom section on a base a on battens b. The sections may have double walls g, h, and have overhanging edges f to cover the interstices. The top section is provided with a hinged or slidable cover which may be sloped and formed of glass or other transparent material. The cover is adjustably mounted on its supports to allow for ventilation. Heating units d may be supported between opposite walls of the bottom section. The heating may be electrical, the units comprising wire resistances on porcelain cores mounted on tubes of glass, porcelain, steel or other material. Connections are made through porcelain caps to a power source. Where the cover slopes, the heating units are arranged closer together at the deeper part of the frame. A thermostat s is provided ; it may be adjustable vertically or horizontally in the frame and provided with means for adjusting the temperature it maintains. Plants are supported on trays o on shelves p. To provide sufficient humidity, the trays are packed with moistened earth, sand, coco-nut fibre or other absorbent r. The heating units may be covered with similar material. The trays may be made in two parts providing room for water between them so as to prevent rapid temperature variations.
