Abstract

384,258. Recording sound and other oscillations. ZADDACH, R., 148, Langhansstrasse, Weiszensee, Berlin. Feb. 4, 1931, No. 3564. Convention date, Feb. 18, 1930. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 40 (ii).] A method of recording sound and other oscillations consists in subjecting a suitable material, other than metal, to electrical polarization so as to influence the polar arrangement of the molecules of the material in accordance with the oscillations. The material is recorded when in a heated or softened state and is afterwards cooled or otherwise treated. Suitable materials consist of one or more of the following : rubber, resins, celluloses, albumens. Alternatively, a metal, metal sulphide or graphite may be dispersed as small particles in a base, or a piezo-electric material such as tourmaline may be dispersed in a wax or like base. The polarizable substance may be disposed on a base in the form of a thread, ribbon, or disc, and such base may consist of metal sheet or foil, cellulose, gelatine or rubber. A metal wire may be provided with a coating of the polarizable substance, or the latter member may be embedded in a silk &c. thread. The recording apparatus shown in Fig. 1 comprises two electrodes 3, between which the ribbon 1 constituting the record carrier is passed, and such electrodes are connected to.an amplifier 6. The ribbon passes to the electrodes 3 from a heating chamber 2 so that the material is in a softened state, and after recording the ribbon passes to a cooling medium 7. The cooling may be effected by liquid air or liquefied carbo-hydrates. When the ribbon is in the form of a coated wire, a single electrode of annular shape is provided. In reproducing, an electrode 11, Fig. 2, cooperating with an electrode 14, is connected. to an amplifier 6 and loud-speaker 12, and a blade 10 is provided in order " to remove the surface layer of absorbed ions." Alternatively, the record ribbon may be used as a continuously varying dielectric medium passing between two electrodes constituting a condenser, or, when the ribbon is of transparent material, optical reproducing means may be used, and a metallic reflecting layer may then be disposed at the back of the ribbon for reflecting back the light beam. The ribbon may be adapted to receive both sound and picture records.
