Abstract
1,108,565. Recording process for gramophone records. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 14 Dec., 1964 [14 Dec., 1963], No. 49476/63. Heading G5R. A master gramophone record in the form of a layer of wax on a conducting plate is mounted on a turntable, which may be the conducting plate, and charged electrostatically, for example by electron bombardment. A laser beam is directed on to the surface by a mirror which turns slowly to scan the beam radially across the record so that the beam traces a spiral track. The beam softens the surface of the record, and the electric charge causes a depression to be formed where the surface has been softened; the depth of the depression depends on the charge and on the intensity of the beam and may be varied by varying either or both parameters. Alternatively the beam may be moved radially in accordance with the modulation. The radial movement may be caused by a mirror, a prism, a liquid medium in which an effective grating is set up ultrasonically, or a doubly refracting prism preceded by a device for rotating the plane of polarization of the light may be employed. Stereo signals may be recorded by controlling the lateral and depth modulation in response to the sum and difference signals or by using a pair of vibrating mirrors operating on a split beam. The laser may be excited continuously or in such a manner that the softening effect of its beam is effectively continuous.
