Abstract

383,738. Drawing arrangements. LITTY, P., 8, Groitzscher Strasse, Leipsic, Germany. Nov. 10, 1931, No. 31158. Convention date, Nov. 25, 1930. [Classes 120 (i), 120 (ii), and 120 (iii)]. A machine for determining the correct spacing of drawing rollers for any particular draught comprises means for altering the distance between the nipping points of two pairs of feed rollers so that the roving takes on a waviness, this waviness being caused to disappear by correctly adjusting the roller spacing. The machine also comprises means for altering the draught. For the displacement of the nipping point a knife-edge 2 is provided, which is mounted on a member 1 pivoted at 3 counterweighted at 5, and operated manually bv the handle 4. When the handle 4 is raised the knife-edge 2 engages the roving and so displaces the nipping point of the rollers bl, b2 towards that of the rollers a<1>, a<2>, whereupon a waviness is produced in the roving in a vertical plane, the waviness being observed in an inclined mirror 8 and by the passage of the roving over an illuminated translucent plate 44. By moving the rollers the waviness is caused to disappear, and the correct distance between the nipping points is then read off of the scale 7. The pairs of rollers are journalled in housings g .. k. The housing g is fixed, and the housings h, i, k are moved by means of conveyer spindles n capable of rotary and axial movement, and having three separate threaded parts n<1>, n2, n<3>, the threads of which are differently handed and of different pitch ; by operating the handles 18, 18<1> separately or together, any desired spacing of the rollers may be obtained, their positions being read from the scale 7. For enabling the draught to be varied, the rollers are driven through step wheel gears 24, 36. By means of the crank e, or a motor, the front roller a<1> is rotated, and through a gear train, the shaft 21 is also rotated. The shaft 21 is slotted, and slidably mounted thereon and rotatable therewith is a gear 22 to which is pivotally attached an arm carrying a gear 27, which engages the gear 22 and the step cone 24, and so transmits the drive to the latter. The gear 27 can be engaged with any portion of the step gear 24 by means of the handle 28, and is held in position by a weight 29. The roller b<1> is driven from the step cone 24 by a similar arrangement of gears 30, 26, operated by a handle 31, and a gear train. The back roller d' is driven through gears 33, 34, 35 from the shaft of the step gear 24, and the roller c<1> is driven from the roller d<1> by a similar step gear 36 operated by a handle 39. Each gear train for driving a roller includes a gear mounted on a pivoted lever similar to that incorporated in the step wheel mechanism, so that the spacing of the rollers may be altered whilst a positive drive is maintained. The handles 28, 31, 39 for altering the draught are each provided with a calibrated notched scale as at 41, so that the draught between any pair of rollers can be readily ascertained.
