Abstract

383,016. Liquid-fuel burners. RUTHERFORD, E. J. Y., Cherrycot, Charlton Kings, Cheltenham. Oct. 9, 1931, No. 28098. [Class 75 (i).] Spray burners.-In a liquid-fuel burner of the type in which the fuel is atomized by steam generated in a flash boiler heated by the burner flame the steam generator comprises two or more equal pairs of tubes arranged outside the flame zone and having their forward ends connected together. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 3, an angle-iron frame c supports a fuel tank a and a water tank b, the fuel tank being detachably secured in position by a strap a<1> provided with a handle a<2>. The water is forced by the pressure produced in the tank b by an air pump d through a pipe e3 to the steam generator. The steam generator consists of a number of fittings k, j connected by pairs of converging tubes l, l<1 >which are joined at their forward ends by headers l<3>. The tubes l, l<1> contain core rods m similar to those described in Specification 237,203, [Class 75 (i), Burners &c.], and are supported by straps l<2>, l<6>. The fittings k are connected by loops k<1>, and the fittings are connected by tubes i to a hub h carrying the steam nozzle n which is fitted at its rear end with a wire gauze filter n<2>. The hub h is secured by a nut h<1> to an angle-plate g<1> forming part of a box g detachably mounted on the frame c. The fuel nozzle p is adjustably threaded in an elbow q rotatably mounted in a boss r supported below the hub h, the elbow q being fitted with a regulating valve q<2> and communicating by a pipe q<1> with a sump f in which the fuel flowing from the tank a is maintained at a constant level below the top of the elbow q. An adjustable set-screw is provided for positioning the elbow q before it is secured by a nut r<2> to the boss r. The tubes l, l<1> may be protected from the direct impact of the burner flame by being embedded in a tubular fireclay sheath but, preferably, the box g is extended to form a cylindrical cover t and a choke tube u resting at its front end on the strap l<6> and its rear end on a lug q7 on the elbow q is provided inside the generator tubes. The tube u is connected at its front end by an annular disc u<1> to a sleeve u<2> so as to cause the air for combustion to follow a long course and be preheated on its way to the flame. A three-way cock e enables air to be supplied from the tank b to atomize the fuel at starting. In a modified form of burner shown in Fig. 8, the burner tubes l, l<1> are parallel and are connected at their forward ends by bends l<7> attached to a supporting ring l<6>. The rear ends of the tubes l<1> are connected to a cross member x connected to the water tank and the rear ends of the tubes l to a boss z carrying the steam nozzle. Specification 356,150 is referred to. Liquid fuel supply.-The fuel tank a is fitted with a valve a<4> which is opened against the resistance of a spring when the tank is in position by contact with a filter pan f<2> supported by the domed base of the sump f. The cap a<7> of the spout a<3> of the tank a is screwed on a holder a<8> on the water tank when the burner is in operation. Cleaning burner nozzles by steam.-A thimble o<4> in the hub h may be withdrawn from its seating h<4> by rotating a screw plug o so as to allow the steam to escape past the shank of the nozzle n to radial outlets h<5> in the hub. The resulting suction draws air through the nozzle and filter and removes any obstructions.
