Abstract

Polymerization products of indene, styrene, vinyl esters and like monovinyl compounds after the reaction is complete but still in the hot state are pressed out of the reaction space by means of a difference in pressure such as increased pressure or a vacuum to give products that may readily be pulverized, dissolved, comminuted or rolled out. By means of suitably shaped nozzles rods or threads which may be collected on spools may be obtained or the product may be directly injected into moulds. Catalysts, softening agents, fillers, and the like may be added during the polymerization which may take place continuously. In examples (1) styrene is polymerized in a pressure-tight vessel and the product is pressed out under a pressure of nitrogen giving a thread which may be comminuted; the hot product may be directly pressed into a closed mould or the disintegrated cold material may be fed into an injection moulding machine. Covers for electric switches or other insulating articles for electric or wireless apparatus, vanity boxes, powder boxes, knobs, handles, buttons, or transparent or coloured artificial jewellery may be made. (2) A mixture of monomeric styrene which still contains ethyl benzene and tricresyl phosphate is forced through a heated tube coil and the product is taken off from a nozzle. Specification 383,216 is referred to.ALSO:Polymerization products of indene, stipene, vinyl esters and like monovinyl compounds that have been pressed out of the reaction vessel after the polymerization is complete but while they are still hot may be directly pressure or injection moulded. Specification 383,216 is referred to.
