Abstract

382,658. Sound-recording circuits. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., HILL, S. S., and THOMAS, P. R., Connaught House, Aldwych, London. July 30, 1931, No. 21753. [Class 40 (iv).] In an electrical recorder, e.g. a telegraphone, having a linear response to increasing input amplitudes (abscissµ) in a first range AB, a non- linear response in a second range BC not appreciably reducing intellegibility, and a poor response in a third range CD, a signal in the third range automatically introduces an attenuator so that the signal is reduced to the second range before recording. The arrangement is useful for recording telephone conversations of both calling and called parties at one of the substations as large variations of volume level occur in such a case. In the telegraphone recording circuit shown in Fig. 2, the line L is connected by an amplifier R and normally ineffective attenuating network N to the recording magnet M. On arrival of a signal of amplitude in range CD, or in the neighbourhood of C, a slow release marginal relay O energized by amplifier-detector AD throws the network N into the circuit.
