382,548. Writing pads &c. HAKKINEN, K. P., Oulu, Finland. April 11, 1932, No. 10376. Convention date, Jan. 7. [Class 16.] A protected writing or mapping pad for use in the open, provided with a transparent cover attached by flexible side pieces which have an opening for the hand of the user is supported by a strap, hooks, or the like at the free edge of the cover so that when in use the pad is held open by its own weight and when closed is held in that position by the pressure of its weight against the body of the user. The base 2, which may be a pad or a support for a pad, has attached to it two waterproof sides 3, 4 carrying a transparent cover 1 hinged to the base 2. Extensions 6, 7 of the sides 3, 4 are adapted to fold round the sleeve of the user to close the writing opening. A shoulder strap 5 is provided to support the device in writing position. Swinging supports may be provided to support the cover 1 in writing position. When the device is folded, the extensions 6, 7 of the sides 3, 4 can be folded over the open edge of the device and secured by means of press studs, straps, or the like. Pockets for paper, maps, pens, a compass, &c. may be provided under the base 2, and a lighting device may be attached. The device may be fitted with a carrying strap and a cover for the transparent cover 1. The stiff parts of the device may be adapted to telescope or may be hinged so that the device can be folded into a smaller compass. A cover may be provided for the transparent cover. A handle may be provided for holding the device by the left hand. The device may be applied to a map bag, knapsack, &c.
