Abstract

381,795. Pit props. BARKER, R. E., Aysgarth, Warren Avenue, Knottingley, Yorkshire. Jan. 6, 1932, No. 368. [Class 20 (ii).] A tubular steel pit prop c, is reinforced by steel strips l which are arranged longitudinally in the tube and are interspaced by a lighter material such as wood w. The strips extend from an upper wedge-shaped disc d to a plug b secured to the base of the tube. The tube is cut away at e to accommodate the disc d and a wedge k engaging therewith. The upper edge of this wedge engages with a vertically movable head a which fits into the upper end of the prop and extends between the disc d and the roof of the pit. The overall length of the prop can thus be adjusted by altering the position of the wedge, the increased or decreased compressional stresses thus produced being taken by the strips l. The lower end of the prop fits into a tube f having an aperture g through which loose coal can be introduced, when the two tubes c, f are extended, to vary the overall length of the prop.
