Abstract

381,696. Photometric apparatus. RICHARDS, C. L., BENSON, E. B. R., and BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., 133, Long Acre, London. Sept. 18, 1931, No. 26168 and 27607. [Class 97 (i).] The optical density of a liquid is measured or compared with that of a standard liquid by transmitting light through a variable aperture and through the liquid on to a light-sensitive cell, the deflection of an electrical indicating instrument connected to the cell being brought to a predetermined value when a solution of known optical density is in the path of the light beam by adjusting the size of the variable aperture or by adjusting the temperature of the lamp filament constituting the light source. Two cells 8, containing a standard liquid and the liquid to be tested are mounted side by side on a holder 16 which can slide in grooves in a block 18 so that light from the source 2 may be made to traverse either cell. The light is rendered parallel by a lens 4 and passes through a variable aperture in a mask 6 before passing through the liquid. The light after passing through the liquid passes through a mask 10 and is then focused by a lens 12 on to the sensitive surface of a photo-electric cell 14. The aperture in the mask 6 can be varied by means of a sliding plate 34 moved by a screw 38. A variable resistance 28 and a voltmeter 26 are included in the circuit of the lamp 2. The holder 16 may be moved by a lever in which the movement of the operator's hand is considerably greater than the movement imparted to the holder.
