381,202. Torpedoes. WILLIAMS, L. W., 3, Seacliffe Avenue, Belmont, Takapuna, Auckland, New Zealand. June 25, 1931, No. 18402. [Class 9 (ii).] In automatic steering-gear, applicable to torpedoes, light-sensitive cells 11, 12, arranged on opposite sides of the compass-card 10 and illuminated from a common or separate sources of light 9 are placed in the grid circuits of thermionic-valve amplifiers which include also switches 18, 21 which control the motor 20 geared up to compass bowl as by the mechanism shown. Deviation from the set course causes the relative illumination of the cells to be varied owing to the displacement of the compasscard which is provided with unequally disposed edges or with slots in different planet. The resulting variation in the grid current brings the servomotor into play to correct the deviation. The invention may also be applied to repeater compasses and course recorders.
