Abstract

A selenocyanine dye in the form of its alkyl halide or alkyl sulphoalkylate is used for sensitizing silver halide emulsion to blue rays. The products may have the formula: <FORM:0380702/IV/1> wherein R1 may be a substituent such as methyl, methoxy, ethoxy, or chlorine. Naphthoselenocyanines may also be used. 1 : 1<1>-Diethylbenzoselenocyanine iodide is prepared by heating 2-methyl-benzoselenazole ethiodide with acetic anhydride and a little amyl nitrite, and re-crystallizing the product from alcohol.
