Abstract

380,607. Typewriters &c. THEWLIS, J., 70, Kempton Road, Wavertree, Liverpool. Sept. 26, 1931, No. 26847. [Class 100 (iv).] Type-lever machines; machines for embossing book-covers ; hammer -impression arrangements. -A machine for printing on or stamping bookcovers or the like comprises a set of type-levers which are selected by keys and are caused to impress the book-cover by means of a pedal operated pressure member, the book-cove being supported by a slide having line-spacing adjustment on a carriage provided with pedaloperated letter-spacing mechanism. In the machine shown in Fig. 1, the book-cover is placed on a slide 4 which is movable for linespacing on a letter-spacing carriage 2 mounted on guides 3 on the framework 1. The slide is provided with an adjustable stop 5 and preferably with a clamp for the book-cover. Typelevers 6, pivoted on a semicircular support 7, abut on levers 18 connected to key-levers 15, depression of any key-lever moving the associated type-lever into position for being depressed by means of a plunger 8 to effect impression. The plunger is connected by linkage 11, 10 to a pedal 12. The type-levers may be actuated by electromagnets, and interlocks may prevent simultaneous operation of two type-levers or fouling of the plunger and a type-lever. To permit of change of fount or case, the type-levers may be arranged in two alternatively operable sets, or may be mounted on a removable slide 49. Two or more sets of type-levers may be arranged side by side, the carriage being moved into position beneath the required set. Aligning for impression.-The impression plunger 8 may be provided with radial ribs and a conical cavity for aligning the types. Heating-arrangements for types.-To facilitate stamping letters in gold or other foil, the machine is provided with a gas, air, or electric heater 47 for the types. Letter-spacing mechanism.-The pedal 12 operates letter-spacing mechanism comprising a shaft 20 mounted on the carriage 2 and provided with a pinion 19 co-operating with a stationary rack, and ratchet wheels 22 cooperating with pawls 23 on a cranked spindle 24 mounted on the carriage. An arcuate arm 25 on the spindle engages a link 26 pivoted to a bail 27 which is mounted to slide in a bracket 28 on the carriage and engages a rod 29 carried by rocking arms 30 connected to the pedal. On depression of the pedal, the bail is raised by a spring 34 and the pawls are retracted, whilst on release of the pedal, the bail is depressed and the pawls effect letterspacing movement of the carriage. The movement is adjusted by shifting the link 26 along the arm 25, a finger-lever 38 for this purpose being arranged over a scale 39 and being connected by a link 40 to the link 26. The teeth of the ratchet-wheels are staggered relatively. To permit of carriage-return, the pawls are released by rocking a shaft. Line-spacing mechanism.-The slide 4 is moved for line-spacing by means of a fingerlever connected to pawls co-operating with ratchet wheels on a shaft mounted on the slide and provided with a pinion 35 co-operating with a rack 36 on the carriage 4. Roller inking-arrangements.-The impression plunger 8, Fig. 10, is provided with a reciprocating ink-roller 56 and a distributing-plate 53, and can be turned by means of a handle 60, associated with a scale 62, to bring the ink roller into the path of the selected type. The ink roller is suspended by links 55 from pivoted arms 54 connected to a link 58 having a pin 57 which co-operates with an abutment 59 to reciprocate the ink roller during descent of the impression plunger.
