Abstract

A light-coloured compounding ingredient for rubber mixes which confers wear-resisting qualities to the rubber similar to that conferred by carbon black, is made by grinding inorganic earthy material with 0,1-10 per cent of an organic acid, or a salt or ester of an organic acid, preferably a fatty acid, in a ball mill having balls under 2 in. in diameter and comprising a volume at least 15 per cent of the volume of the mill, at a speed of at least 25 per cent of the critical speed, critical speed being defined as that at which centrifugal force on the balls is equal to that of gravity. The time of grinding may vary from 10 mins. to 36 hours depending on the materials, size of mill, size and number of balls, and the speed, and is determined by making test mixes. Examples are given showing the improvement in tensile strength, abrasion loss, and flexing qualities of mixes containing calcium carbonate ground with 1 per cent of stearic acid, and also with 3 per cent of benzoic acid, clay with 3:5 per cent of zinc stearate, and talc with 3,5 per cent of zinc stearate, on mixes containing the untreated fillers.
