Abstract

379,916. Valve amplifying circuits. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., Marconi House, Strand, London. -(Assignees of Farrow, F. R. ; 700, White Horse Pike, Audubon, New Jersey, U.S.A.) Nov. 14, 1931, No. 31586. Convention date, Nov. 26, 1930. [Class 40 (v).] In a thermionic amplifier the gain is arranged to vary in accordance with signal strength so that loud passages are reproduced at m o r e realistic levels and the change in relative amplitude effected in recording or in wireless transmission is wholly or partially corrected. The gain control is effected by a thermionic valve the cathode emission of which is controlled by amplified signal currents. In addition the control prevents overloading on strong signals. The system is particularly applicable to wireless receivers embodying automatic volume control. The Figure shows an arrangement in which the volume is controlled by varying the grid bias to the push-pull amplifying valves 1, 3 by means of auxiliary valve 39 the anode current of which reduces the voltage drop in the portion of the potential divider 27 which supplies grid bias to valves 1, 3. Anode current in valve 39 is controlled by filament heating which is derived from the output signal through winding 37. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the auxiliary valve is arranged in series with the anode supply to the amplifying valves and controls the anode potential. Filters may be included in the connection to the control valve so that the system may discriminate in favour of frequencies in any desired range. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect, 91 (3) (a) comprises also a further modification in which the auxiliary valve controls the grid bias of the amplifying valves, but the impedance of the auxiliary valve instead of being controlled by filament heating, is arranged to rectify at the bottom bend and is controlled in grid potential in parallel with the output valves. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
