Abstract

379,786. Liquid-meters. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.- (Brodie Co., R. N.; 61st Street, Oakland, California, U.S.A.) June 16, 1931, No. 17494. [Class 69 (ii).] A fluid meter comprises pistons 24, 25, Fig. 1, reciprocating and turning-on rods in a pair of parallel cylinders 10, 11 fitted with ports A .. D, Fig. 2, co-operating with the meter inlet and delivery ports 15, 16. The inlet port 15 communicates with intake chambers 18, 19, 20, the chamber 19 communicating with ports B of the cylinders and the chambers 20 with ports A. The outlet port 16 communicates with outlet chambers 21, 22, 23, the chambers 22, 23 being located at the top of each cylinder and in communication with ports C, and the chamber 21 communicating with ports D below the cylinders. Each piston, Fig. 4, is centrally divided by a partition 26 and has four ports 27 .. 30, each extending the full length of the piston, the ports 27, 29 opening at end 31 of the piston and ports 28, 30 at the opposite end. To enable these pairs of ports to register alternately with the intake and outlet chambers in the cylinders, the pistons are oscillated by radial arms 33 connected with a rotatable synchronizer 34. This synchronizer, Fig. 3, consists of a revolvable ring 35 forming the inner race of a ball bearing 36, the outer race of which is. secured in a bracket 37 fixed to the cylinder casing. Attached to the ring 35 is a centre disc 38 having two radial slots 39, 40 spaced 90‹ apart in which the radial arms 33 are engaged by sockets 41, 42. The sockets are adjustable in relation to the centre of rotation of the synchronizer so that the stroke of the pistons may be adjusted. This adjustment is effected by means; of a pin 50 passing through a rotatable trunnion 43 having eccentric ends 44, 45, Fig. 2, which are 90‹ apart and engage the inner ends of the sockets 41, 42. These sockets are held when adjusted by cap screws 46. The adjustment is shown on a calibrated scale 51, the pin 50 acting as pointer. The synchronizer 34 operates suitable counter mechanism 60 through a train of gears as shown in Fig. 2. Heavy foreign matter present in the fluid passing through the meter settles in the lower discharge chamber and similarly, any air present rises and discharges through the upper ports without affecting the accurate operation of the meter.
