Abstract
379,596. Driving-belts. ROGER, G., 23, Victoria Road, Macclesfield, and ANTROBUS, C. J., Eaton Hall, Congleton, both in Cheshire. Jan. 1, 1932, No. 10. [Class 80 (i).] A coated fabric having considerable resistance to abrasion, and suitable for making belting, is made by impregnating or coating a cut-pile fabric with a filling of light character, drying and brushing the fabric, and then applying a second filling or coating in such manner that the ends of the pile threads project slightly above the level of the second filling. The fabric, which may have pile on one or both sides, is first washed to remove the size, stretched and allowed to dry. A light filling, of thin rubber solution for example, is then applied which waterproofs the fabric and stiffens the pile. When dry, the fabric is dressed or brushed, and, where rubber is used as the filling, this may be vulcanized. A second filling of heavier nature is then applied to fill up the spaces between the pile, allowing the ends of the latter to project # of an inch or less, however. In making belting, the fabric may be folded upon itself, with an adhesive filling between the folds. The filling material may comprise rubber substitutes, balata, gum tragacanth, gums with alkali soaps, or other materials.
