Abstract
379,473. Coal-cutting machines. BUTTERWORTH, L., Brampton Terrace, Sand Hills, Gt. Houghton, near Barnsley. July 20, 1931, No. 20663. [Class 124.] In a rotary percussive coal-cutting machine, a tool-carrying shaft 1 is caused to reciprocate upon a fluted driving-shaft 5, which is coupled directly to an electromotor or compressed-air turbine, by means of an undulating piston head 3 formed upon a piston-like enlargement 2 of the shaft 1 and adapted to co-operate with fixed undulating collars 6, 7 adjustable for wear by bolts 14, 17. A fluted nut 4 is screwed into the piston 2 to engage the fluted shaft 5, and friction discs 9, 12 are provided at suitable intervals round the faces of the collars 6, 7. The apparatus together with its motor is fed by means of a hand-operated feed screw 18 inside a framing 20 supported by ball-bearings on cross members (not shown) between uprights 23 so as to be readily swung laterally by means of a handle 25.
