Abstract

379,467. Gas meters. PARKINSON & COWAN (GAS METERS), Ltd., CHESHIRE, W. D., and BUTTERWORTH, E., Bell Barn Road, Birmingham. July 16, 1931, No. 20396. [Class 54]. A meter for gases or liquids comprises two cylindrical chambers a separated by a chamber b and each containing a hollow cylindrical rotor e which can rotate with slight clearance from the chamber on eccentrics g secured to a spindle h operating the counting mechanism. The rotors e carry radial vanes i which extend through apertures j in the chambers a into lower chambers k and are provided at lower ends with rollers l engaging guide slots m in the chambers. The chambers k contain a sealing liquid into which the vanes dip and preferably communicate with one another through a passage t below the chamber b. The chamber b is divided by a partition s into two compartments. Gas supplied to the compartment through an inlet connection q passes through ports o in the walls between the chambers a, b to the space on one side of each vane i thereby causing rotation of the rotor and the expulsion of the gas on the other side of the rotor through ports p to the other compartment of the chamber b, which compartment is provided with a gas outlet r. The two rotors are arranged at 180‹ apart on the spindle h so as to prevent a "dead centre " position of the meter. The rotors are balanced by weights c and may be mounted on antifriction rollers /. The vanes i may be rigidly or hingedly attached to the rotors or may each consist of two hingedly connected parts, one part being rigidly attached to the rotor. Additional gas inlet and outlet .ports o, p may be provided in the end walls of the chambers a and the meter may comprise more than two rotors operating in separate chambers. Fig. 5 shows a construction suitable for use when only a single rotor is employed in which the gas is admitted to the chamber k through an inlet pipe wand withdrawn through a pipe u. When the rotor is in its lowest position a sealing piece v on the rotor dips into the sealing liquid over the pipe wand prevents the passage of unmeasured gas. As the rotor passes into close proximity with the wall of the measuring chamber the piece v becomes unsealed.
