Abstract

Colour lakes are manufactured by precipitating a basic dyestuff (which may contain acid groups) with mineral heteropoly acids (complex acids containing phosphorus, molybdenum, silicon, and tungsten, such as phosphotungstic, phosphomolybdic, silicotungstic, molybdophosphotungstic and silicomolybdotungstic acids), together with organo-heteropoly acids (complex acids containing the radicles of gallic and tannic acids, such as gallomolybdic and gallotungstic acids). The precipitation may be effected by adding to a solution of the dyestuff a solution containing both the mineral and the organo-heteropoly acid, or the acids may be added in separate solutions, simultaneously or successively. The precipitation may take place in the presence or absence of a substratum such as blanc-fixe, and in the presence or absence of dispersing or softening agents such as Turkey-red oil. In examples: (1) Brilliant Green crystals Y is precipitated by means of phosphotungstic acid and potassium digallomolybdate in the same solution, Turkey-red oil being added immediately after the precipitation; (2) Rhodamine 6GDN conc. is similarly precipitated; (3) Methyl Violet 2B is precipitated by means of the same compounds, but added successively in separate solutions and without the addition of Turkey-red oil; (4) Brilliant Green crystals Y is precipitated by means of phosphomolybdic acid and potassium monogallotungstate in the same solution; (5) Brilliant Green crystals Y is precipitated by means of a mixture of a solution of phosphotungstic acid with a molybdotannic acid solution obtained by adding molybdic oxide to a suspension of tannic acid in hot water rendered alkaline with potassium carbonate; (6) Disulphine Green B is dissolved in an aqueous solution of phosphotungstic acid and potassium digallomolybdate, the solution is added to a suspension of aluminium hydrate and the lake precipitated by the addition of barium chloride solution; (7) Brilliant Green crystals Y is precipitated by means of phosphomolybdotungstic acid and potassium digallomolybdate in the same solution.
