Lakes.-Colour lakes fast to light containing molybdenum are made by treating basic dyestuffs, which may or may not contain acid groups, with components capable of yielding complex molvbdenum compounds. The components may be added simultaenously or successively to a solution of the dyestuff containing a substratum, or the dyestuff may be partially precipitated by a complex acid, e.g. phosphotungstic acid or antimony tungstic acid, and the precipitation completed by adding components capable of forming complex molybdenum compounds. In examples (1) a substratum of heavy spar, alumina, and precipitated barium sulphate is mixed with a solution of methyl violet B extra and the lake is precipitated by adding ammonium molybdate and disodium phosphate solutions and acidifying with hydrochloric acid, and (2) a methyl violet lake containing phosphoric acid and turkey red oil, made by mixing aluminium sulphate and methvl violet B extra with a suspension of heavy spar in disodium phosphate solution and precipitating with barium chloride in the presence of turkey red oil, is treated with ammonium molybdate. Other molybdates, such as sodium molybdate, may be used.
