Abstract
Phthalocyanine dyes are made by heating copper salts with phthalic acid-4-sulphonaamides in the presence of urea, if desired with the addition of compounds of elements of Group V such as molybdates, vanadates, and phosphates or with the addition of boric acid, or by heating cuprous cyanide with 1 : 2-dihalogenbenzene-4-sulphonamides in the presence of tertiary amines. They show bluish to greenishblue shades. In so far as they still contain hydrogen atoms attached to the nitrogen of the sulphonamide group they may be transformed into colour lakes, e.g. by causing them to react with alkaline earth metal salts. In examples: (1) 1 : 2-dibrombenzene-4-sulphophenylamide is boiled with cuprous cyanide in quinoline; the phthalocyanine tetraphenylsulphonamide obtained is soluble in aqueous alkalies; (2) phthalic acid-4-sulphonamide is heated with urea, cuprous chloride, boric acid and ammonium molybdate; the soluble dyestuff may be precipitated with barium chloride; (3) similar to (2) using phthalic acid-4-phenylsulphonamide and copper chloride; (4) phthalic acid-4-methylphenylsulphonamide is treated as in (2); (5) and (6) similar to (3) using phthalic acid-4-n-butyl or 4-isobutylsulphonamide; the products are soluble in aqueous caustic soda, pyridine, dioxane and acetone. Specifications 464,126, 464,673, and 476,243 are referred to. The phthalic acid sulphonamides are made by treating phthalic acid sulphochloride with ammonia or amines.
