Abstract

Sulphur and alkali or ammonium sulphates are obtained from alkali or ammonium bisulphites, from mixtures containing these, or from sulphur dioxide with the intermediate formation of such bisulphites, by reacting them with calcium or other alkaline-earth metal sulphide in aqueous solution, separating the deposited alkaline-earth metal sulphite precipitated, and heating the remaining solution containing neutral alkali sulphite, alkali thiosulphate and alkali-trithionate at temperatures of about 80-180 DEG C. under the pressure spontaneously produced in the reaction vessel or under higher pressure. The CaSO3,2H2O precipitated in the reaction may be reconverted into calcium sulphide for further use by heating with solid, liquid or gaseous carbonaceous reducing agents. Sulphur dioxide may be reacted with gaseous ammonia in the presence of sufficient water vapour or finely divided water to form ammonium bisulphite which is separated in the solid form by an electrostatic field or in a bag filter and is then employed in the above process.
