378,523. Ornamenting coated fabrics. ARMSTRONG CORK CO., Lancaster, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.-(Assignees of McCarthy, J. C. ; Manheim Township, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) May 15, 1931, No. 14463. Convention date, Nov. 21, 1930. [Class 140.] An irregular design simulating marbling &c. is produced on floor &e. coverings by spreading oolour on a backing by means of lateral and longitudinal motions and then further blending the colour by means of a motion lateral to the backing. As shown, a felt-base fabric provided with a coat of paint which remains wet until the process is completed, is passed under a series of guns 12 adapted to apply differentlycoloured spots or blobs of paint, the spots are drawn out into sinuous streaks by a reciprocating scraper 17 inclined as shown by the line D .. D, and the streaks are further spread and blended by a second blade 30 arranged at right-angles to the fabric. The fabric may then be overprinted, e.g. with black squares to provide alternate black and marble tiles. The section M shows the streaks produced by the scraper 17, N the effect of the second scraper, and P the overprinted design. The guns 12 are supplied by tanks 13, and are operated under low pressure so as to spatter the paint without atomizing it ; preferably, air pressure is applied to the paint in the tanks and is adjusted as required. Also, the guns are controlled by electromagnets 14 controlled in turn by a contact drum 15. Each of the blades 17, 30 is mounted on an angularly adjustable base, and may be reciprocated by hand or by cams driven by variable-speed motors.
