Abstract

378,405. Electrical brakes. BARKER, G. G., 59, Chancery Lane, London.-(Bendix Brake Co. ; 401, North Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana, U.S.A.) April 30, 1931, No. 12752. [Class 103 (i).] Brakes particularly for motor vehicles comprise an electrical power device which upon the closing of a circuit containing the device develops automatically an increased effort to apply the brakes. The power device comprises a series of axially arranged electric coils 25 increasing successively in strength, surrounding a rod 51 connecting the brake pedal to the brakes. A magnetizable core 18 carried by the rod is adapted to be drawn into the coils by actuation of the rod by the pedal and the coils are progressively energized in advance of the core. Brushes 22 carried in an annular groove in a cylinder 52 of insulating material are adapted progressively to complete the circuits of the coils in advance of the core 18. The circuit through the coils is also controlled by a switch on the brake pedal, Fig. 9. The outer ends of the coils are electrically connected to the casing 43 which is connected by a lug 44 and screw 46 to a bracket 45. The inner ends of the coils are connected to strips 23 adapted to be engaged by the brushes 22 which also engage a conducting strip 21 connected by a connection 40 to a binding post 41. A source of current is connected to post 41 and the bracket 45. An annular spring 56 forces the brushes 22 apart. The brake pedal, Fig. 9, has attached to it by rivets 62 a shell 61 having an upper part 70 hinged at 76. Two contact plates 63, also held by the rivets 62 are connected to two armoured wires 67 which are brought down to the pedal pivot before leaving the pedal. The plates 63 are insulated from the shell 61 and the rivets 62 and are adapted to be engaged by a contact plate 71 carried by the hinged part 70 when this part is moved by the pressure of the operator's foot. A return spring 81 is arranged between stampings 79 riveted to the parts 61, 70 of the shell. The part 70 telescopes over the part 61 an opening 82 covered by a plate 83 allowing this movement.
