Abstract

<PICT:0378341/III/1> <p/2> <PICT:0378341/III/2> <PICT:0378341/III/3> Solutions are crystallized by evaporation or cooling in a trough-like receptacle divided by stationary partitions into a number of compartments which co-operate with a series of rotary partitions adapted to close periodically the passages in the stationary partitions and thus to trap the liquid in one or more adjacent compartments. A pan 1 provided with cooling or heating coils 13 is divided into compartments 3 by partitions 2 which are spaced from the bottom of the pan so as to leave semicircular openings 4. A horizontal shaft 5 carries semicircular discs 9 staggered in relation to one another which on rotation close the passages 4 once every revolution and thus alternatively establish and interrupt communication between adjacent compartments. The juice is supplied through a pipe 10 and discharged through a pipe 11 and flows through the pan under gravity. In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the juice is circulated by mounting a screw conveyer in the shaft 19 carrying the rotary discs 31 and the open trough is heated or cooled by supplying liquid through a hollow rotary shaft 18 to hollow discs 20 provided with recesses which mesh with the screw blades 32. Scrapers 37<1> are placed between the discs. In the modification shown in Fig. 6 the crystallizing tank 1 is revolubly mounted and is provided with annular partitions 49 which co-operate with partition 48 on the stationary heating or cooling drum 46.
