Abstract

378,249. Protective pads. YATES, E. D., 93, Stockport Road, Cheadle Heath, Stockport. Oct. 3, 1931, No. 27503. [Class 141.] A protective pad for use in playing games and for other purposes, is provided with one or more attachment members (for example, springs or cards) connected, or adapted to be connected, at two or more points to the same edge of the pad and connected, or adapted to be connected, to itself or to one another at one or more points between the points of conne ction to the same edge of the pad. As shown in Fig. 2, applied to a cricket pad, a coil spring 6 sheathed in rubber or leather is connected to one edge of the pad by tabs 1, 9, 8 and carries by means of slidable hoops 11, 12, a similar spring 13 terminating in eyes 14, 15 and slidable in a central loop 20 carrying an eye 21. In attaching the pad, the eyes 14, 15, 21 are engaged with hooks 19 carried by tabs 16, 17, 18 on the other edge, of the pad, and adjustment is made by sliding the loops 11, 12 along the springs. In modifications, additional adjustment is afforded by replacing the tab 16 and eye 14 by a strap and buckle fastening, or by providing a short spring extension between the tab 16 and eye 14. In a further modification, the two springs 7, 13 are continuous at the upper ends so as to form a single spring. In a further modification, Fig. 7, a cord is employed instead of a spring and the fastenings are tightened up by pulling a portion of the cord through an additional loop 36. In a modification, Fig. 8, the springs 42, 43 are attached to the sides of the pad and are connected by buckles 55. Instead of buckles 55, a sliding fastener of the kind known as a zip fastener may be used. In a further modification, Fig. 11, the two springs 98, 103 after being hooked to tabs 93 .. 96 are tightened up by a strap and buckle 107. A modification where three springs are used is shown in Fig. 12. The upper spring 110 may be in two portions to provide a slidable adjustment for tightening the pad. The pad may be modified for use as a shin guard, an arm pad or a body pad.
