Abstract
377,734. Sewing-machines. WADE, H., 111, Hatton Garden, London.- (Maschinenfabrik Moenus Akt.-Ges.; Frankfort-on-Main, Germany.) April 27, 1931, No. 12431. [Class 112.] Chain stitching by barbed needles.-In a curved-needle welt-stitching machine, the movements of the sewing, feeding and guiding devices are derived from a common eccentric 6 on a crank and linkages connected therewith. A hollow shaft 5 accommodating the main driving shaft 151 drives the eccentric 6. A coupling device 180, 181 is provided on the right of the machine to connect the driving shaft 151 with the shaft 5 when a treadle bar 164 is actuated. On the left side of the machine, a second coupling acts automatically when the treadle is released to connect the main shaft with the devices for cutting and gripping the welt and thread and is automatically disconnected as soon as this work is done. The shaft 5 carries the eccentric 6 which actuates the stitching devices, a lever 7 which actuates the welt-guiding means, and a lever 8 which actuates the work-feeding means. Needle drive. The swinging lever 12, Figs. 1 and 2, for actuating the needle derives its movement from bhe eccentric 6 by the link 29 pivoted at 30. Swinging movement of the levers 12, 31, 34: is transmitted to the needle segment 40 by a link 39. Awl drive. An arm of the lever 12 is connected by the bolt 55, joint 56, link 471, joint 58 and bolt 57 to the carrier 53 of the awl 54. The awl carrier 53 oscillates on the pivot 52 fastened. to the work-feeding member 16. Channel-guide drive. The same arm of the lever 12 is connected to the carrier 59 of the channel-guide 60. The carrier oscillates round the same pivot 52 as the awl carrier. Thread finger. This is also driven from the same arm of the lever 12 by suitable linkages to an arm 79 secured to the hollow shaft 27. Looper. The looper 44, Fig. 1, is driven by the link 29 from a lever. The lever 103 for tensioning the thread is carried by a pivot 22 and is actuated by the arm 12 <IV> of the lever 12 by a link 104. A yielding lever 108 on the pivot 23 equalizes the tension of the thread 107. Welt guide. This guide 122, Fig. 18, is driven by the lever 7 swinging about the hollow shaft 5. The lever 7 is connected to the link 29 by another link. The lower arm of the lever 7 is connected to the link 112 and a segment 116 which oscillates on a pivot 118. A bolt 119 fixed in a member 114 drives the oscillating carrier 123 of the welt guide 122 by a link 120 and bolt 121. Machine drive. The machine is driven by a pulley 150, Fig. 15, on the shaft 151. A speed-gear housing 4<111> is provided. The right end of the shaft 151 is journalled in the housing 4<111> and in the hollow shaft 5. Planet gears, a brake and a free-wheel coupling are provided. By tensioning the brake band 163, the velocity of the disc 154 coupling the shaft 151 to the shaft 5 is varied. Cutting.-As bhe shoe stitching is finished, the end of the welt 207 and the last thread loop 107<1> are severed by knives 203 and 206 respectively. The welt is clamped by grippers 201, 202 and the thread is clamped by a finger 205 during cutting. These tools are arranged in a carrier 217 normally retracted while the work is in progress, but moved up to the work at the completion of sewing. The necessary movements are derived from an eccentric on the shaft 151. The eccentric is coupled to the shaft 151 at the beginning and end of each shoestitching. The former coupling is for pulling off welt and thread to commence the stitching operation. Feed by awl.--The feed is effected by a member 16 carrying the awl 54 and the channel guide 60. The feed movements are derived from a bolt 61 of the link 29 and the feed stroke is adjusted by a lever 36.
