Abstract

Mucilaginous, resinous, and albuminous matters are separated from fatty oils by emulsifying the oils with a small proportion of aqueous phosphoric acid at 15-45 DEG C., heating the emulsion rapidly to 55-120 DEG C. and filtering, centrifuging, or settling. 0,1-5 per cent of acid of 10-65 per cent strength is suitable. Water or dilute alkali in smaller proportion than the acid may be added to the emulsion to assist separation; substances assisting precipitation, e.g. active carbon, bleaching earth, silica gel, gypsum, zinc dust, or water-soluble salts such as sodium chloride or magnesium sulphate, may be added with the acid or later. Residual acid and impurity may be removed by aqueous alkali, e.g. ammonia, and by an adsorbent, e.g. active carbon, bleaching earth, silica gel. The treatment of soya-bean, peanut, linseed, cotton seed, and animal oils is referred to. In an example, 100 lb. of soya bean oil is intimately mixed at 35 DEG C. with 1 lb. of phosphoric acid S.G. 1,253 for \ba1/2\be hour, and the temperature is raised to 60 DEG C. in 20 minutes; 0,2 lb. of water is mixed in for 10 minutes, the whole settled for 3 hours, and the separated impurities withdrawn. 0,03 lb. of concentrated ammona diluted with 0,12 lb. of water is stirred in and the temperature raised to 70 DEG C., and the liquid settled. The separated oil is washed with water, dried at 90 DEG C. and 40 mm. pressure, stirred with 0,25 lb. of bleaching earth, and filtered.
