Abstract

<PICT:0377259/III/1> <PICT:0377259/III/2> In the formation of carbon by the catalytic decomposition of carbon monoxide wherein the powdered catalyst is kept in suspension by mechanical agitation, the amount of catalyst supplied is regulated in correspondence with the carbon monoxide introduced. The gas is fed into the reaction chamber by a pipe 6 into which the catalyst, e.g. ferric oxide, is delivered by a worm 20 from a container 9. Agitation of the catalyst within the gas p is effected by paddles 3 spirally arranged on a hollow shaft 2, adapted to be water cooled, and provided with a pulley 8<1> from which the worm 20 is driven through a pulley 8. By altering the ratios of the pulleys 8, 8<1>, the amount of catalyst delivered can be regulated. A pressure gauge and a pyrometer 14 are provided whereby the conditions of the reaction can be controlled. The pulley 8 may be driven from the shaft of a gas meter through which the carbon moxoxide passes. As shown in Fig. 3, propellers 31 on the shaft 2 are adapted to move the catalyst in a direction opposite to that of the gas current. Two valved outlets 13<1>, 13<2> are provided for the escape of the reaction products, the outlets communicating with either side of an apertured partition 30 by which the gas in the chamber 1<2> so formed is protected from material projected by the paddles. By manipulating the valves in the outlets, the rate of discharge of the products can be controlled. Jackets 33 are provided through which steam may be passed for ensuring a reaction temperature of 425 DEG C. and a heat-insulating covering 35 may be provided; the jackets 33 may also be used for cooling media.
