Abstract

Metal polishes are obtained by mixing an aqueous solution of a wetting agent and of a cleanser with a solution of wax in an organic solvent; abrasive and soap may be added. Wetting agents specified are alkylated sulphuric acid derivatives of binuclear or polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons. Waxes specified are paraffin, carnauba, and ester waxes. Solvents referred to are solvent naphtha, tetrahydronaphthalene, turpentine, and o-dichlorbenzene. Suitable abrasives are infusorial earth, tripoli, and silica. Cleansing agents include oxalic, citric, acetic, and tartaric acids, their ammonium salts, and alkali metal salts. The soap is preferably formed in situ by dissolving oleic, stearic, or palmitic acid in the solvent, and ammonium hydroxide in the aqueous solution. In an example, 7,5 lbs. of paraffin wax and 5 lbs. of oleic acid are dissolved in 225 lbs. of commercial o-dichlorbenzene, and 50 lbs. of infusorial earth is stirred in; the pasty mass is slowly poured into a solution of 5 lbs. of ammonium oxalate, 1,5 lbs. of 28 per cent ammonia, and 2,5 lbs. of sodium 1-isopropyl-naphthalene-1-sulphonate in 500 lbs. of water.
