[Class 27.] In a coin-freed telephone substation having two step-by-step devices which must be set to corresponding positions before conversation can take place, one device being set in accordance with the coins inserted and the other by impulses sent back from the exchange in accordance with the charge for the connection desired, as described in the parent Specification, the device which is set from the exchange controls also the collection and refund of the coins. Coin-discharging mechanism; returning coin. -When the connection is released, further impulses are sent to magnet R to restore shaft 44 to normal and during this movement cam 18 controls contacts r<2> to connect up the collect magnet K which operates if the call has been successful to withdraw flap 51, thereby freeing platform 28 so that the money falls into the shoot 53. In a subsequent position of shaft 44, cam 19 causes arm 20 to free platform 28 so that if magnet K has not operated, the money is refunded through shoot 59. When the receiver is hung up, a projection 22 on member 2 pivoted to hook H, engages with a pin 23 on segment 8 to restore shaft 9 to normal and to tension spring 7.
